Ali Cengizkan

Born in Ankara, 1954. Graduated from TED Ankara Koleji High School (1966-1973) and received his degrees from Middle East Technical University Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture (B.Arch. 1978; M.Arch. 1980; Ph.D. 2000). Joined METU Department of Architecture teaching staff as TA (teaching assistant) in 1981 and gave ARCH 301-302 Architectural Design studios for more than 25 years, for some time as the Acting Coordinator of sections. From 1994 to 1998, was the Chairperson of the same Department: departmental memorandums began to be issued: committees and commissions were founded and institutionalized on programmatic basis; departmental scholarships and awards were launched; informal association of National Network of Chairs of Architectural Departments in Turkey, namely MOBBİG ( was organized as a collective achievement in the field of architectural education. Received Asst. Prof. (2002), Associate Prof. (2003) and Full Professorship at METU in 2011; was member of the few University and Faculty commitees, and commissions; was the Dean of the METU Faculty of Architecture from August 2012 till August 2015. Worked as member in the committees and commissions of the national institutions TMMOB Mimarlar Odası (CAT, Chamber of Architects, Turkey), SANART, Edebiyatçılar Derneği, Mimarlar Derneği 1927, and international institutions of CICA (International Committee of Architectural Critics,, docomomo-int (International Committee for Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement, and ENHR (European Network for Housing Research,; is one of the 14 founder-members of docomomo-tr. Represented Turkey for CAT at ACE, Architects’ Council of Europe, for three years (, 2009-2012). Is the Charing Member of the Recognition Council of Higher Education, CoHE, Board of Architectural Schools (YÖK Mimarlık Alanı Denklik Komitesi, 2015).

For 11 years (2002-2013) was the Editor of ODTÜ Mimarlık Fakültesi Dergisi / METU Journal of the Faculty of Architecture (ODTÜ MFD / METU JFA), the bi-lingual, bi-annual scholarly Journal that has been published by the Faculty starting 1975. The METU JFA/ODTÜ MFD entertains a world-wide popularity, is indexed by several institutions and followed by quite a few databases.

His interests and research fields mainly focusing on architectural design education, architectural criticism and evaluation, revolving on housing and urban history, especially residential formations in and urban history of Ankara, and housing design, now have been directed towards diverse scales of episteme: Space-place dichotomy; place and power; lifestyles and sustainability; design and creativity; discursive empowerment and political hegemony, are but some of these.

With high appreciation of individual and institutional memories and historiography, draws importance on communicative relations; lays emphasis on publishing about architecture-planning-design research fields, expecting a reasonable turn-over in the culture of architecture and design. Was awarded for his books in Turkish on several occasions. Is also known as a poet; with 10 books of poetry, 1 book on poetics, 7 books of translated poetry, with own poems translated into quite a few different languages.
