Catalog Description
Academic reading and writing skills; critical reading and note-taking within the framework of a thematic and integrated skills approach; writing a well-organized essay; engaging in academic discussions; listening and reading activities; emphasis on citation techniques
Course Objectives

The overall aim of the course is to improve the students’ four skills in an integrated manner and to develop and improve higher order thinking skills in the students.

Upon succesful completion of this course, a student will be able to
1. Reading At the end of the course, the students will be able to make good use of pre-reading strategies such as predicting, skimming, scanning, etc.; identify reference signals and understand what they stand for; understand and use academic vocabulary; guess the meanings of words they do not know by using appropriate clues; use dictionaries with efficiency; make inferences from a reading text ; identify major and minor ideas within a text; distinguish between facts and opinions; understand the relationship between ideas within a text; evaluate the ideas in a text and reflect on them, identify the writer’s attitude and style, understand the tone of the text ; respond to the ideas in a text.
2. Listening At the end of the course the students will be able to understand the main ideas in a text; differentiate between major and minor ideas; take notes by making use of notetaking strategies; understand implied ideas; identify the speaker’s attitude and style; understand the tone of a listening text; respond to the ideas in listening texts.
3. Speaking At the end of the course the students will be able to express their opinions ; justify their opinions by giving reasons; ask for clarification; handle questions effectively; present information; carry on a debate.
4. Writing At the end of the course the students will be able to write expository essays; use appropriate methods of organization; use appropriate language structures and discourse markers; follow the stages in a process writing approach; become familiar with citation techniques; summarize, synthesize, quote, and paraphrase information from different sources.
