Catalog Description
Introduction to theoretical and methodological frameworks in the field of design; Contemporary and historical issues in design discourse; Design rhetorics; Design activism & design hacking; Design anthropology; Eco-design, upcycling and environmental ethics; Experience-driven design; Design thinking, creativity and innovation; Bio-design; Anti- design; Critical and speculative design.
Course Objectives

The course aims to equip students with a set of theoretical and critical tools in exploring, evaluating and making sense of contemporary phenomena in the field of product design. A second objective is to engage students in a critical-reflexive design work whereby they will implement a chosen theoretical and/or methodological framework in developing ideas for an experimental design brief.

Upon the conclusion of this course, students will be able to;      

  1. Analyze specified designed products from a critical standpoint,
  2. Explain design activity in relation to broader contexts of social, cultural, historical and political phenomena,
  3. Interpret the meanings of existing design works by making use of semiotic & rhetorical frameworks,
  4. Employ concepts and vocabulary that are introduced by the course content in discussing the significance of designed artefacts,
  5. Synthesize knowledge and insight gained from the course contents to define a broader vision for design in contemporary and future societies.
