Catalog Description
Turkish curriculum. The importance of first reading and writing education. Preparation and planning for reading. Preparation and planning for writing. Sound-based sentence teaching. The literacy teaching process. Reading and writing teaching methods from past to present. Problems encountered in the reading and writing process. Use of technology and materials in teaching reading and writing. Measurement and evaluation in teaching reading and writing.
Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to enable students to structure their knowledge of the theoretical context of primary reading and writing instruction and to put the knowledge they can construct into practice at a skill level.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:

 

  1. argue the process of reading and writing as interactive involving reader, text, and contextual factors,
  2. describe the components of a complete literacy program including a print rich environment, reading, small group (e.g. guided) reading, independent reading, creative writing and speaking,
  3. explain principles of scientifically-based languages arts research that addresses reading, writing, and speaking components including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension,
  4. apply components of fostering language arts comprehension and metacognition in teaching plans,
  5. assemble various methods for classroom measurement for language art instruction especially to allow for differentiation of prior knowledge.
