The Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants (SGDD-ASAM) - Psychological Support and Psychoeducation Program Kicked Off

SGDD-ASAM, The Psychological Support and Psychoeducation Program coordinated by TED University, Bilgi University and Trauma and Disaster Sanity Studies Community (TART) kicked off in 22,09,2016. The 6 week long studies will take place at TED University and 300 people from SGDD offices in 41 different cities will be hosted.

The program trainers are TART members assistant professor Ilgın Gökler Danışman (TEDU, Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences faculty member) and associate professor Banu Yılmaz (Ankara University, Department Psychology faculty member). The program’s objective is to focus on the burnout syndrome and secondary traumas stemming from working together with immigrants and refugees through psychoeducation and supportive experimental group implementations. To this end, the program aims at creating awareness and evaluating the possible negative effects of taking responsibility in relief works; developing coping/handling capacities; supporting the psychological resistance ; developing protective factors; eliminating long term negative effects and supporting post-traumatic improvement.

The project also includes a research study which will evaluate the effectiveness of the program.

The Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants (SGDD-ASAM) was established in Ankara on December 22, 1995 as a non-profit and non-governmental organization. SGDD-ASAM is the implementing partner of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Turkey Office and a member of both Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures and UNITED for Intercultural Action.

The primary goal of SGDD-ASAM is to create solutions to the problems that refugees and asylum seekers encounter in Turkey, to help them to fulfil their primary needs and to support them to provide access for fundamental rights and services. Since its establishment, SGDD-ASAM has been providing psycho-social support for asylum seekers and refugees coming from conflict zones. SGDD-ASAM aims to attract the relevant authorities’ attention to the problems of performs of refugees and asylum seekers by carrying our awareness raising activities.

Today, SGDD-ASAM carries out its works with its expert staff consisting of the personnel for case workers, psychologists, social workers, health educators and translators in 41 provinces with 46 offices.

SGDD-ASAM provides services to refugees and asylum seekers without discrimination on the grounds of language, religion, sex, race, sexual orientation and political ideology. SGDD-ASAM contributes to the academic studies by analysing national and international crises with the aim of forecasting national and international migration movements.

SGDD  also offers studying, internship and voluntary work opportunities for university students who study social sciences, economics and administrative sciences, law and medicine in various fields like forced migration in Turkey and the world, legal procedures of forced migration, experiences of refugees and immigrants in the countries of asylum, ways of finding solutions for refugees (legal-social, psychological counselling, health counselling) and activities organized for different refugee groups.
