Catalog Description
Politics and poetics of modernization in Turkey: Political currents in the late Ottoman period; Competing readings on Kemalist discourse; Right wing politics-conservatism-nationalism-Islamism; Left wing intellectual traditions-from social democracy to socialism.
Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to provide students with an in-depth overview of the major political currents in Turkey from the late Ottoman period to contemporary times. The course seeks to analyze the main arguments, conceptual-theoretical tools and political projects of Kemalism, nationalism, conservatism, Islamism, and socialism with a view to the impact of domestic and international political developments. 

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.Illustrate the historical development of political thought in Turkey within intellectual and political contexts,

2.Examine the socio-cultural dynamics underlying the evolution of political thought in Turkey,

3.Analyze primary texts and scholarly literature on political currents in Turkey,

4.Design research on diverse intellectual traditions in Turkey,

5.Illustriate the effects of international political milliue on the evolution of political currents in Turkey,

6.Evaluate the views of key political thinkers that have shaped Turkish political discourse.
