Catalog Description
Historical, economic, and political dynamics of modern China; China’s transition into modernity; Republican era Chinese politics; Chinese politics during and after the Maoist era; Chinese political economy; China’s transition to state capitalism; China in the global economy; Chinese foreign policy; China in the East Asian regional order; China and international institutions; Belt and Road Initiative.
Course Objectives

This course aims to provide an in-depth analysis of contemporary China from the late Qing Empire to the contemporary period. To this end, the course will endow students with the ability to evaluate China’s economy, politics and foreign policy. The course also aims to provide students with the analytical tools necessary for assessing contemporary economic and political challenges China faces as well as evaluating China’s role in regional and global political economy.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.Illustrate the historical foundations of China’s economy, politics and foreign policy,

2.Analyze the issues in Chinese economy, politics and foreign policy with an area studies perspective,

3.Identify the main actors in Chinese economy, politics, and foreign policy,

4.Assess the importance of “Chinese characteristics” within Chinese economics, politics and foreign policy,

5.Explain current issues in Chinese foreign policy,

6.Evaluate China’s role in regional and global political economy.
