This course aims to introduce students to the fundamental concepts and practices of sound design for audio-visual storytelling. It combines basic theory of sound, hearing and digital audio with hands-on work in DAWs such as Logic Pro X and Reaper, including recording, editing, processing, and mixing. A further aim is to enable students build a practical studio workflow, develop critical listening skills, and learn to communicate ideas and emotions through sound. By the end of the semester, students are expected to complete an original sound design project from concept to final mix.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1.Explain core concepts related to sound, hearing, digital audio and signal flow,
2.Apply appropriate microphone techniques to record speech, foley, and ambience,
3.Process audio recordings, applying EQ, dynamics processing and time-based effects to support a creative intention,
4.Design sound effects, ambience, and foley in synchronization with picture,
5.Apply sound mixing techniques for different playback systems, taking into account loudness and format requirements,
6.Critically evaluate their own and others’ sound design work through constructive feedback.
