Academic reading and writing skills; critical reading and note-taking within the framework of a thematic and integrated skills approach; writing a well-organized essay; engaging in academic discussions; listening and reading activities; emphasis on citation techniques
Course Objectives

This is a common-core course designed to help students develop their academic English skills. In addition to refining their reading, listening, speaking and writing skills, students will be introduced to new academic strategies that will help them in their departmental studies. Students will learn how to summarize, paraphrase and cite sources.      

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon succesful completion of this course, a student will be able to

1.Identify the main topic and related ideas in an academic text,

2.Identify examples supporting an argument in an academic text,

3.Distinguish between main ideas and supporting details in a presentation or lecture, 

4.Justify and sustain views clearly by providing relevant explanations and arguments,

5.Summarize information from an academic text,

6.Support a line of argument in an academic text using direct and indirect quotes,

7.Write an academic essay in response to a specific question.
