Writing a term paper by following a process approach; doing library and internet research, formulating a thesis and researching supporting ideas; one-on-one tutorials with instructors for feedback during the stages; oral presentation with the aim of defending written work; emphasis on the importance of avoiding plagiarism.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon succesful completion of this course, a student will be able to
1. Reading At the end of the course, the students will be able to make good use of pre-reading strategies such as predicting, skimming, scanning, etc., identify reference signals and understand what they stand for understand and use academic vocabulary, guess the meanings of words they do not know by using appropriate clues, make inferences from a reading text, identify major and minor ideas within a text, distinguish between facts and opinions, understand the relationship between ideas within a text, evaluate the ideas in a text and reflect on them, identify the writer’s attitude and style, understand the tone of the text, respond to the ideas in a text.
2. Listening At the end of the course the students will be able to understand the main ideas in a text, differentiate between major and minor ideas, further improve their notetaking skills, understand implied ideas, identify the speaker’s attitude and style, understand the tone of a listening text, respond to the ideas in listening texts.
3. Speaking At the end of the course the students will be able to express their opinions, justify their opinions by giving reasons, ask for clarification, handle questions effectively, present information and data related to the topic, describe visual aids.
4. Writing At the end of the course the students will be able to do research (library and internet), evaluate the relevance and reliability of a source, write notecards, write expository essays, write a term paper, use appropriate methods of organization, use appropriate language structures and discourse markers, follow the stages in a process writing approach, follow the appropriate citation techniques, summarize, synthesize, quote, and paraphrase information from different sources.
