Catalog Description
Power switches and their characteristics. Power diodes, thyristors, power transistors, and power metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFET). Single and three phase controlled rectifiers. Alternating current voltage controllers. direct current-direct current (DC-DC) converters. Pulse width modulation inverters.
Course Objectives

By taking this course, the students will be able to understand converters in detail. The emphasis will be on the conversion of amplitudes of DC signals efficiently. Under conduction and switching, losses converters will be designed which satisfy certain requirements.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
(1) Perform steady-state converter analysis,
(2) Understand volt second balance and charge balance methods,
(3) Utilize small ripple approximation technique,
(4) Obtain equivalent DC transformer models,
(5) Realize switches using semiconductors,
(6) Understand the basics of semiconductor devices,
(7) Perform analysis under switching and conduction losses,
(8) Employ discontinuous conduction mode analysis,
(9) Apply transformer isolation technique.
