Catalog Description
Historical and theoretical grounding of interdisciplinary approach. Interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, transdisciplinary approaches in mathematics education. The rationale, beneficial aspects and limitations of the interdisciplinary approach. Interdisciplinary activities and modules in mathematics education. STEM as an approach and model. STEM learning activities and modules.
Course Objectives
This course aims to enable students to associate mathematics education with different disciplines, make sense of the outside world with the knowledge and skills in different disciplines, and solve the problems they encounter by associating them with different disciplines. In this context, it is aimed to enrich the learning-teaching process in this course, to enable students to use what they see in the lesson in other areas, and to provide them with the knowledge and experience to design STEM learning modules by working collaboratively and employing the engineering design process.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. evaluate a topic, event, problem, topic or experience with the method and understanding of more than one discipline,
2. discuss the difficulties and constraints—but also the opportunities—that interdisciplinary activities poses,
3. design STEM learning activities and modules,
4. assess STEM learning activities and modules,
5. describe the characteristics of good interdisciplinary activities in mathematics education.
