Catalog Description

Origins and evolution of cities from the first permanent settlements to contemporary urbanization. Interactions between geography, natural resources, economy, society, technology, and urban form across different historical periods and civilizations. Comparative analysis of representative cities from Mesopotamia, Anatolia, the Mediterranean, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Historical transformations of urban form, spatial organization, and planning traditions, and their relevance for understanding contemporary cities.

Course Objectives

This course aims to introduce the historical evolution of cities from the first permanent settlements to the contemporary era. It examines the relationships between geography, society, economy, technology, and urban form across different civilizations and historical periods through comparative case studies. The course also aims to develop a critical understanding of the historical processes that have shaped cities and to provide students with a historical perspective for interpreting contemporary urbanization and planning.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
