Introduction to the political economic history of the modern Middle East. Political developments from the late 18th century to the present. The Western penetration into the region. Modernization attempts and revolutions in the Ottoman Empire, Egypt and Iran. World War I and emergence of new nation-states. The Arab-Israeli conflict. Middle Eastern political economy during the Cold War.
