Art and design are the primeval forms of expression through which humans made sense of, and actively contributed to the experience of living in diverse environments. As a result, principles, practices and products of art and design became the keystones of the visual and multisensory cultures of past and present societies. Thus, being critical beholders and conscious consumers of artworks and design products, as well as becoming active participants in art and design practices figure among the skills that are essential for the 21st century citizen. This course offers a holistic look at the fields of art and design as active agents of daily life. It considers their constant, dynamic, and mutually defining relationship with fundamental areas of a society’s organization including -but not limited to- history, politics, economy, industry, and science.
