Catalog Description
Linear wave theory, wave transformations (shoaling, refraction, breaking, diffraction, reflection), wind-generated waves and their prediction, wave climate, design of rubble mound and vertical wall breakwaters.
Course Objectives
Main objective of this course is to introduce the students the small amplitude wave theory, refraction, shoaling, diffraction and reflection of waves and the wave breaking phenomenon.

Upon succesful completion of this course, a student will be able to
1. Explain basic concepts of coastal engineering like wave breaking, diffraction, refraction, shoaling, wind generated waves
2. Assess forces acting on massive coastal structures
3. Design vertical wall structures
4. Design rubble-mound breakwaters
