Catalog Description
Economic dimensions of violence and peace. Economic explanations of war and peace. Economic impact of war and the costs of peace. Links between conflict, poverty, and development. Economics of terrorism and foreign policy.
Course Objectives
This course introduces political-economic explanations of conflict and peace at various levels of analysis. This course presents the main economic dimensions of conflict, including economic factors contributing to conflict and the economic implications of conflict. This course also examines the economic consequences of war, conflict, military expenditures and peace; the economic aspects of moving from conflict to peace, in particular the relationship between conflict, security, and development.
Software Usage
Students will use MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint) to work on their weekly assignments about 4 hours a week.

Upon succesful completion of this course, a student will be able to
1. Have a more complete knowledge of the complex relationship between economics, political instability; conflict and military expenditures.
2. Explain political economic issues relating to war, conflict and peace.
3. Utilize economic analysis to assess conflict issues in particular countries and situations.
4. Be able to apply theoretical and empirical economic analysis to the study of conflict, war and peace.
5. Demonstrate strong critical analytical skills.
