Course Objectives

The major aim of this course is to present an overview of political and economic transformations in Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy during the 19th and 20th centuries. The course is designed to survey the historical origins of democratic instability, the corporatist-authoritarian experience and transformation processes in the Southern European context from a comparative perspective.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon succesful completion of this course, a student will be able to
1. Understand the historical processes and factors that shape the Southern European political structure.
2. Understand the conceptual framework for assessing Southern European politics.
3. Employ a comparative framework to assess different country experiences in the region.
4. Identify the distinctive features Southern European politics.
5. Access and make effective use of the sources of knowledge on the topic.
6. Communicate effectively in speech and writing.
