This course aims to analyze the evolution of Turkish foreign policy with a view to the continuities and ruptures starting form 19th century until contemporary times. The course deals with the historical, economic and political dynamics underlying the foreign policy preferences and the foreign policy making process.
Upon succesful completion of this course, a student will be able to
1. Describe and evaluate Ottoman foreign policy.
2. Describe and evaluate Turkish foreign policy during World War I, War of Independency and World War II.
3. List constants and changes of Turkish foreign policy from Ottoman times until today.
4. Recite and discuss Turkish foreign policy during the Cold War era and afterwards.
5. Describe the main actors in Turkish foreign policy.
6. Explain the foreign policy making process by applying level of analysis.
7. Analyze the importance of “westernization” within Turkish foreign policy.
8. Assess and comment on current issues in Turkish foreign policy.
