Basics of manufacturing: processes, materials, and design parameters. Concepts of metrology in manufacturing. Manufacturing processes for non- metallic materials. Design for manufacturing and assembly. Economics of modern manufacturing. Manufacturing systems. Quality control systems in manufacturing.
Course Objectives

This course aims to develop the competence of students as design engineers. The emphasis is on the creative design process bolstered by the application of physical laws. Instruction on how to complete projects on schedule and within budget, robustness and manufacturability are emphasized. The course includes idea generation, estimation, concept selection, visual thinking, computer-aided design, and technical communication in manufacturing systems.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will be able to:

  1. Classify different manufacturing processes, their advantages, and their drawbacks considering the final product design,
  2. Accomplish experiments related to mechanical properties of materials and production parameters,
  3. Assess manufacturing process parameters in terms of product and economical design,
  4. Describe the concept of design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA),
  5. Explain integrated manufacturing systems, modern automation, and quality assurance systems.
