This course aims to familiarize students with the basic concepts and theories of sociology. It tries to reveal the global and universal as well as humanistic approach to sociology. Besides it aims to include and value the rapid transformations and advancements of today’s world. Most importantly the course aims to make students understand that society affects them deeply and that many things they think about as being personal, in reality are social and thus topics of sociology.
Upon succesful completion of this course, a student will be able to
1. Display knowledge about sociology’s main concepts and theories.
2. Reveal the intellectual and ethic importance of the sociological imagination.
3. Apply and relate individual experiences to society per se and sociological concepts.
4. Encourage critical thinking, awareness and consciousness of socio-economic, cultural and political processes.
5. Gain and apply non-discriminative behavior and language.
6. Acquire a human-centered and gender-sensitive view and recognize the value of individual, social, political, cultural diversity.
