Catalog Description
A survey of contemporary literary and cultural theories focusing on power, materiality, and the more-than-human world. Awareness of the role of these theories in the interpretation of literary and cultural texts.
Course Objectives
This course will examine contemporary literary and cultural theories focusing on power, materiality, and the more-than-human world and their application to literary and cultural texts. It will cover major theoretical developments from feminism and postcolonialism to ecocriticism and posthumanism while introducing students to diverse modes of cultural analysis and interpretation.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the principal concepts, debates, and theorists associated with feminist, postcolonial, historicist, materialist, ecocritical, and posthumanist approaches,
- Examine the relationships among literature, culture, power, history, materiality, and the more-than-human world from diverse theoretical perspectives,
- Apply contemporary theoretical frameworks to the interpretation of literary and cultural texts across different historical and geopolitical contexts,
- Critically assess how changing understandings of subjectivity, agency, embodiment, and environment reshape literary and cultural analysis.
