Catalog Description
The origins and development of the epic tradition. Study of the major works of the epic genre and its characteristics. Analysis of the epic hero through the ages. Influence of epic tradition on modern art and culture.
Course Objectives

The main objectives of the course are to explain the characteristics of the epic genre and related concepts, and to provide a working knowledge of the characteristics of the hero in epic tales as well as in later literary genres.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to;

1.Identify the origins and development of the epic tradition in various societies,

2.Acquire a working knowledge of various reiterations of the hero’s journey in different literary traditions,

3.Discuss how patterns from epic tales and characters influence modern art and culture.

4.Compare different epic traditions and heroes in selected texts.
