Catalog Description
The origins and development of the epic tradition. Study of the major works of the epic genre and its characteristics. Analysis of the epic hero through the ages. Influence of epic tradition on modern art and culture.
Course Objectives
The main objectives of the course are to familiarize students with the epic genre and related concepts, and to provide a working knowledge of the characteristics of the hero in epic tales as well as in later literary genres.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the conclusion of the course students will be able to:
1. Understand the origins and development of the epic tradition in various societies.
2. Have a working knowledge of various reiterations of the hero’s journey in different literary traditions.
3. Understand how patterns from epic tales and characters influence modern ways of thinking.
