Catalog Description
A broad examination and critical analysis of human violence and warfare in literature through close reading and theories of memory and trauma. Analysis of the selected poems, novels, short stories and films from the 20th and 21st centuries. Raising awareness about war and violence through literary analysis.
Course Objectives

This course explores experiences and effects of war through close reading and theories of memory and trauma. Students will study poems, novels, short stories and films from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.Critically reflect on ways in which violence is defined, theorized, represented and responded to in arts and literature,

2.Define the abuse of power and the use of violence based upon gender, ethnicity, race, class, sexual orientation and age,

3.Interpret literary texts to construct reasoned and reflexive arguments using valid evidence to support claims and conclusions,

4.Explore the capabilities of different narrative forms to reflect violence.
