To be successful in this class, students will need to be able to demonstrate their familiarity with the terminology identified in the class; define children’s literature as exactly as possible; explore the historical timeline of children’s literature; identify traditional storytelling motifs, symbols, and techniques. The above four primary outcomes will be assessed by one or more of the following: quizzes, exams, class discussions, or written critical analytical responses.
Students will also be expected to demonstrate their ability to recognize, identify, and communicate the role of contemporary historical influences and cultural bias in children’s texts; share strategies for using children’s literature in the classroom both to promote creative writing, lateral thinking, and dramatic play, and also to support young children’s literacy and language development; develop principles for combating the difficulties associated with reading and teaching children’s literature. These latter three outcomes will be assessed by one or more of the following: quizzes, exams, class discussions, or a portfolio report, term paper, or written critical analytical responses.
