TED University Hosts the European Sociological Association Interim Meeting

“Sociology of Families and Intimate Lives” Research Group Interim Meeting of the European Sociological Association was hosted by TED University Department of Sociology in Ankara.

The European Sociological Association (ESA) RN13 Sociology of Families and Intimate Lives Research Group Interim Meeting was held at TED University. TEDU Department of Sociology hosted the meeting.

During the recent event, current developments in the field of sociology of families and intimate relationships were discussed. 49 academics and researchers from Finland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Hungary, Russia, Lithuania, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Italy, Denmark, Australia, Czechia and Turkey presented their work. Anna-Maija Castren from Finland and Nükhet Sirman from Turkey gave the opening speeches.

In his keynote speech, TED University Rector Prof. Dr. İhsan Sabuncuoğlu said, "Hosting this meeting, which brings together scientists on a global scale, is very valuable in terms of TED University's academic vision and internationalization goals. Especially the fact that this event is in the family year and in the field of social sciences and that the majority of the participants are international academics makes the event more meaningful. With such events, we will continue to contribute to the advancement of science both in our country and in the world."

“An important portal for international collaborations has been opened”

Stating that the topics of family sociology, parenting, gender relations, migrant and refugee families, fertility and care work were discussed at the meeting, TED University Sociology Department Head Prof. Dr. Gülçin Con Wright said: "We are proud that ESA organized a research group meeting for the first time in Turkey at TED University. This meeting opened an important portal for international projects and academic collaborations."

Featured Topics in the Studies

The main topics addressed at the meeting were parenthood, motherhood, fatherhood, fertility, gender relations within the family, transnational families, migrant and refugee families, and care work. The papers presented provided a broad perspective on the different forms, bonds and experiences of families in the light of individual, interactional and structural factors.

This meeting was the first academic event organized by this research group of ESA in Turkey.
