Catalog Description
Introduction to the principles of conservation of cultural heritage. Examples of conservation implementations both national and international. Problems and developments in the field of conservation in the world and Turkey.
Course Objectives

This course aims to provide the basic knowledge and understanding of cultural heritage and its conservation in reference to SDG. The course intends to trace the development of the consciousness of cultural heritage in time and make it possible for students to define and use the basic terminology in the conservation of cultural heritage within the scope of sustainability in built environment. The aim of introducing concepts and issues related to cultural heritage examples with diverse characters will be realized through assignments and discussions. The scope of conservation implementations, ranging from pre-historic to modern architectural examples, allows students to understand the concept and examples of cultural heritage.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Use the basic terminology of conservation of cultural heritage,
  2. Understand the basic principles of sustainability in built environment within the scope of cultural heritage conservation,
  3. Assess different values of cultural heritage in different scales and the conservation of historic environments considering their diverse character,
  4. Identify the concepts, norms, and issues related to cultural heritage conservation in local and global contexts,
  5. Evaluate practices of conservation and restoration by referring to the contemporary discussions in the field,
  6. Criticize major and recent texts on cultural heritage conservation, drawing appropriate conclusions.
