Catalog Description

Social, spatial and physical approaches to the city. Core concepts and set of core writings on city planning, design, sociology and urbanization. Theoretical perspectives and empirical practices. The role of built environment in shaping social interactions. Planning and urbanization theories, urban social theories, ecological models of urban form, social space, main types of people activity in public spaces, urban way of life, place and identity, urban inequalities, community and neighborhood relations, urban renewal and redevelopment, globalization in social perspective and future cities. Collaborative and multiple ways of learning: Oral presentation, class work, reading, writing, discussions, exams and active class participation.

Course Objectives

The objective of the course is to enable students to explore relations between physical and social organizations of cities in the perspectives of city planning and urban design. The course attempts to provide an analysis of the urban processes such as urbanization, industrialization, globalization, and the introduction of the themes of urban social theory and the social and spatial dynamics that play role in the development of modern cities. Comparative cases are displayed and discussed through the classes to show how similar and different dynamics of urban processes have been triggered by similar forces throughout the history in diverse geographies of the World. 

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

1. Describe the central theoretical issues and core concepts in city planning and urban design sociology,
2. Explain the relations between social, spatial, and physical organizations of cities,
3. Analyze the components of the urban social environment,
4. Design a research algorithm for any issue they intend to analyze or understand in urban studies,
5. Examine a theory with its practice in a socio-spatial perspective,
6. Discuss recent urban problems, issues, and trends.
