Catalog Description
Ray optics. Matrix optics. Wave optics. Fourier optics. Diffraction of light. Holography. Electromagnetic optics. Absorption and dispersion. Polarization optics. Reflection and refraction.
Course Objectives

The primary objective of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of ray optics, matrix optics, wave optics, Fourier optics, and electromagnetic optics, and to equip students with the skills to analyze complex optical systems. Through theoretical exploration, students will confidently predict and interpret optical phenomena, manipulate polarized light, and comprehend the optical principles and their diverse applications.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
(1) Recall the principles of ray, wave, and electromagnetic optics, understanding light interaction and propagation,
(2) Explain the tools of matrix mathematics and Fourier analysis for predicting light behavior,
(3) Use optical phenomena to investigate its impact on optical devices,
(4) Analyze experiments for manipulating light,
(5) Evaluate the performance of fundamental optical systems including mirrors and lenses,
(6) Develop complex optical concepts effectively through written communication.
