National and international language education designs. Legal, social, and political choices in language education policies. Language choices in education. Language reforms.
Course Objectives
This course aims to examine the theory and implementation of language policy and language policy in various policies and jurisdictions in local and global areas. Throughout the course, consideration is given to the application of knowledge gained to real world situations. Various notions of what language policy consists of, how it operates, its historical roots, and ways it can be studied empirically is examined.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- identify the basic concepts, theories and methods of language policy and planning,
- recognize the factors that go into language planning decisions at local, national and international levels,
- analyze the effects of language policy decisions,
- synthesize language planning and language policy in various polities.
