Catalog Description
Basic knowledge of structures, fundamental principles of structural behaviors. Relationship between structure, geometry and form. States of stress and deformation. Analysis of simple structural systems, force characteristics, internal and external forces, loads, moment, equilibrium, support conditions and reactions, shear and axial forces, bending moments. Thermal conduction / insulation, vibration and resonance, electrical conduction / insulation.
Course Objectives
This course aims to introduce basic principles of structural behaviors and applied physics in relation to product design. The concepts of structural systems are covered, so that the students will be able to apply in their design processes. Mechanical, thermal, and electrical features of products and components are introduced to enable students to understand the role of applied physics in how products work.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Describe the structural behaviours of different forms and geometries.
Identify physical factors affecting product functions
Develop structural systems and modify details when designing products.
