Catalog Description
Formation of soils and basic geology. Geomaterial variability. Basic physical characteristics. Index properties and classification. Water in soils and conductivity. Soil stresses and their distribution. Compressibility and consolidation. Stress-strain behavior (shear strength).
Course Objectives

The primary goal of this course is to apply the essential principles of engineering mechanics to soils including their variability, and to determine and effectively communicate their properties through practical laboratory experiments.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Apply fundamental principles of mechanics affecting soil properties and behavior including their variability,
  2. Perform laboratory experiments on soils under varying conditions in accordance with established standard procedures and evaluation methods,
  3. Utilize written and oral communication skills through synthesis and presentation of technical data obtained directly or indirectly.
