Catalog Description
3D stress analysis. Stresses in thick- walled cylinders. Thermal stresses. Contact stresses, buckling of columns. Design of curved beams. Static design criteria. Fatigue design criteria. Design of shafts. Rolling element bearings. Design of spur and bevel gears. Selection of bolts and rivets. Tolerances and fits.
Course Objectives

Principles of mechanical engineering design: Load analysis, materials; deflections and stability; stress analysis; stress concentrations, failure theories of ductile and brittle materials, fatigue, impact. Basic kinematic analysis of mechanisms such as four bar linkages and cams. Analysis and design of machine elements: fasteners, welds; springs, bearings, gears.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon succesful completion of this course, a student will be able to
1. understand the role of concepts, principles, design process, best practices, mathematics, physics, and engineering modeling within mechanical design;
2. apply the concepts, principles, design process, best practices, mathematics, physics, and engineering modeling to realize a complex and high quality mechanical design.
