This course applies principles of mechanics to perform kinematic, force, stress, and failure analyses of structural parts and machine components. Students solve open-ended design problems considering factors like loading, material, manufacturing, and constraints like safety, cost, and performance.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Analyze stresses and strains in machine elements and structures,
2. Apply multidimensional static failure criteria in the analysis and design of mechanical components,
3. Administer multidimensional fatigue failure criteria in the analysis and design of mechanical components,
4. Select rolling element bearings for a given application,
5. Design spur and bevel gears, and riveted and bolted joints,
6. Implement appropriate tolerances for machine design applications.
