Catalog Description
American literary tradition from the beginnings to today. Pioneers, diaries. Puritanism. Basic ideas of American foundation and revolution. The formation of American identity and self. 19th-century American Renaissance, transcendentalism and civil disobedience. American Modernists, the Beat Generation. Sample readings of early poetry, stories, essays and novels.
Course Objectives

This course aims to provide an overview of American literature from pre-colonization to the present. It takes a historical approach that positions the literature in relationship to a socio-historical framework, aiming to examine not only the texts themselves but the circumstances from which they arise.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.Comprehend the nature of American literature as a “national literature” and its role in creating and maintaining the American identity,

2.Explain how gender, race, class, age, and other factors played in developing and expanding American literature,

3.Recognize some recurring literary and cultural themes in the readings,

4.Identify the works of American literature,

5.Articulate their thoughts about selected texts in written and oral discussions.
