Catalog Description
American literary tradition from the beginnings to today. Pioneers, diaries. Puritanism. Basic ideas of American foundation and revolution. The formation of American identity and self. 19th-century American Renaissance, transcendentalism and civil disobedience. American Modernists, the Beat Generation. Sample readings of early poetry, stories, essays and novels.
Course Objectives
This course provides an overview of American literature from pre-colonization to the present. It takes a historical approach that positions the literature in relationship to a socio-historical framework, aiming to examine not only the texts themselves but the circumstances from which they arise.

- Expand students’ understanding of the nature of American literature as a “national literature” and its role in creating/maintaining “Americaness.”
- Understand the roles that gender, race, class, wealth, poverty, age and other factors played in developing and expanding American literature.
- Recognize and articulate some recurring literary and cultural themes in the readings.
- Enhance students’ ability to think critically about works of American literature, and to articulate those thoughts in written and oral discussions.
