Catalog Description
This is an introductory course designed to equip learners with conceptual, theoretical and analytical tools that will enable them to recognize and analyze ‘social’ and ‘political’ matters and develop satisfactory responses. To achieve these objectives, the course will make use of lectures, class discussions, group work, peer learning as well as critical readings and screenings of the relevant material. The primary motivation of the course is to support learners become conscious, critical and active readers of social and political events and eventualities.
Course Objectives

The course will encourage learners to develop a basic familiarity with social scientific theories and research; acquire a comparative and conceptual perspective for studying global political and social issues; foster social and political literacy and an awareness of the local, national and global challenges that contemporary societies face; attain a broad understanding of the interaction between the individual and society, and how local and global social and political factors shape individual experiences; cultivate a holistic approach that links macro politics and socio-cultural phenomena with everyday life practices. 

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Develop critically-reasoned responses for existing and emerging national and global socio-political issues drawing on sociology, politics, and other relevant academic disciplines,

2. Identify major theoretical approaches that attempt to understand and offer critical reflections on the major challenges confronting our nation-states and the world,

3. Communicate ideas effectively and sensitively observing the guiding values such as equality, diversity, multiculturality and tolerance,

4. Undertake research project that builds upon appropriate research techniques to investigate national and global challenges that are facing modern individuals and/or societies.
