The course aims to introduce key concepts of museology (collection, education, exhibition, heritage, institution, musealization, object/muselia, conservation, profession, etc.). It will give an overview of main functions (documentation, collecting, conservation, display, research, communication) and actors (curators, museographers, artists, conservation specialists, architects, engineers, etc.) inherent to the museal field to navigate students within the interdisciplinary processes of research and practice in display design. The course will enable students to analyze theoretical and practical aspects of display considering different scales and contexts of museum and exhibition design.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to
- Define key concepts of museology,
- Classify different modes and techniques of display in exhibition design,
- Associate thematic and technical dimensions of display,
- Identify the role of the architect as a mediator and designer within the interdisciplinary practices of display design,
- Analyze case studies on museum and exhibition design in different scales and contexts from temporary exhibition spaces to display design in historic buildings,
- Assess multi-dimensional interactions emerging between objects, spaces, and observers/visitors in varying exhibition formats.
