TED University has signed the Observatory Magna Charta Universitatum, based on the principles of academic freedom and institutional autonomy, which was accepted by 947 universities from 94 countries throughout the world. The international convention known as the "Constitution of Universities" contains many articles ensuring the autonomy of universities.
TED University Rector Prof. Dr. İhsan Sabuncuoğlu stated that all the rectors who have signed the declaration must undertake the duty of encouraging all national and international organizations to be inspired by the convention, which is based on the principles put forth unanimously by the universities.
Independent education principle will be supported in universities
Stating that there are three basic principles in the Observatory Magna Charta Universitatum, Prof. Dr. İhsan Sabuncuoğlu said, “First of these is the article that the studies of universities must be conducted intellectually independent from external factors so that they can be prepared for the current dynamics of the world. The principle that education and research are inseparable from each other is another significant focus of the convention, while emphasizing the necessity of enabling students to enrich themselves with this information.”
Institutions that signed the convention are considered representatives of the humanist tradition.
Universities are considered representatives of European humanist traditions, according to the Observatory Magna Charta Universitatum, while the application methods included in the convention aim to reach universal knowledge and facilitate the penetration of different cultures. According to these implementation methods, the tools to ensure the protection of freedom in studies and education should be readily available to the university community. Each university is in charge of providing the essential conditions for its students to safeguard their freedom and attain their cultural and educational objectives, in accordance with their unique circumstances.
