Catalog Description
General concepts in steel design. Design methods, codes, safety, and serviceability. Behavior of steel structures. Tension members, compression members, beams, beam-columns, types and behavior of connections in steel structures, bolted and welded connections.
Course Objectives

Main objective of this course is to introduce the students to the basic principles of design and to fundamentals of behavior of steel structures.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon succesful completion of this course, a student will be able to
1. Interpret the material behavior of steel under uniaxial and multiaxial states of stress
2. State how the concept of structural safety is employed in the design of steel members by following different design philosophies
3. Examine stability of steel members under compression
4. Perform design of steel members for uniaxial loading
5. Perform design of steel members for pure bending
6. Perform design of steel members for combined bending and axial load
7. Perform design of connections and fasteners in steel structures
