Catalog Description

First and second language acquisition theories; stages of language acquisition and comparison of first and second language acquisition; factors affecting second language acquisition (eg., age, attitude, motivation); comparing language acquisition of children and adults; role of language acquisition in foreign language teaching.

Course Objectives

• To define concepts and topics of language acquisition;
• to examine language acquisition processes and developmental stages; to identify learner characteristics.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

1. Identify first language (L1) acquisition processes,
2. Recognize second language (L2) learning processes,
3. Differentiate L1 and L2 acquisition/learning processes, 
4. Examine language acquisition/learning theories,
5. Describe the role of learner characteristics in language learning,
6. Discuss individual differences in terms of language learning,
7. Recognize the role of age in language acquisition/learning processes.
