Catalog Description
Cultural history of British and American literature and literary works written in English; fundamental terms and techniques used in text analysis; major genres and styles in literature; important movements and periods; the content and style of various literary texts such as short story, poem, drama and novel representing different periods and genres of English literature; literature’s contribution to our understanding of life; critical interpretation of literary arts.
Course Objectives

To gain an understanding of basic English literary works; to identify various periods in English literature

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • identify English literary works in different periods (i.e. the Anglo-Saxon, the Middle Ages)
  • discuss literary works according to the characteristics of specific periods
  • differentiate between a variety of literary works (genre, characteristics)
  • critique the literary works linking them to societal factors
  • create links between literature and language learning & teaching
