Catalog Description
Analysis of the national middle school mathematics curriculum and international standards (NCTM, CCSS). Mathematical Skills. Using concrete materials. Basic concepts of middle school mathematics. Numbers and operations. Geometry and Measurement. Algebraic Reasoning. Probability. Data.
Course Objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students a deep understanding of national mathematics curriculum. In addition to the national curriculum, the aim of preparing curriculum, curiculum models and frameworks used in different countires, the scope and continuum of the curriculum will be discussed and analyzed. In addition to these, the role of teacher in helping children in gaining 21th century skills and in gaining the understanding of children’s’ mathematical thinking and how they learn math.

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Develop a deep understanding of the concepts, processes, algorithms, and applications found in elementary school mathematics
- Think about the mathematics they will teach
- Learn the scope and sequence of the curriculum and its’ connection with the nature of learning mathematics
- Gain insights into children’s’ mathematical thinking and how they learn math
- Compare and contrast different curricular models and frameworks in an international context
- Analyze the differences and commonalities between different mathematics curriculum developed in Turkey (for example National Math Curriculum developed at 2005, 2013 and 2017)
- Relate content, skills, and beliefs across the mathematics curriculum
- Gain an understanding about the continuum of the learning of mathematical concepts
- Assess the responsibilities of mathematics teachers in fostering 21st century skills
