Catalog Description
Basic concepts of assessments and evaluation. Types of classroom assessments and their development. Grading and reporting. Validity and reliability of qualitative and quantitative data collection tools. Views of international organizations (OECD, IAE, NAEP etc.) on education, and investigating a large scale assessments by the implementation of some studies such as PISA, TALIS, TIMSS, and PIRLS. The assessment frameworks of the achievement tests and the questionnaires of the large scale assessments.
Course Objectives

This course is designed to provide an understanding of current assessment and evaluation methods in mathematics educaion. Topics will span from classroom assessment through international assessment frameworks of the achievement tests. This course will be practical in nature, with an emphasis on preparation to engage in assessment in a meaningful way.

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Have knowledge of the purpose of assessment.
  2. Have knowledge of advantages and disadvantages of norm-references, criterion references, and informal assessment.
  3. Write authentic assessment.
  4. Use of technology for assessment purposes
  5. Discuss factors, which have an impact on assessment
  6. Have a grasp of validity and reliability of qualitative and quantitative data collection tools
  7. Align assessment with mathematics program and instruction
  8. Have knowledge of good assessment measures and the process that generate them.
  9. Analyze student work for identifying strengths and weaknesses.
  10. Have knowledge of traditional and standardized forms of assessments.
  11. Gain a point of view on the assessment frameworks of the achievement tests and the questionnaires of the large scale assessments.
