Catalog Description
Introduction to structural analysis. Displacement methods: slope deflection method, moment distribution method and stiffness method. Derivation of element stiffness matrices, structure stiffness matrix assembly procedures. Computerized implementation of the stiffness method and use of instructional programs. Influence lines and moving loads.
Course Objectives
This is an introductory level course on analysis of statically determinate and indeterminate structures. The main objective of this course is to introduce the students the displacement methods of structural analysis.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Analyze statically determinate structures,
- Calculate deflections of structures by using the method of virtual work,
- Analyze 2d frame structures by using the slope-deflection method,
- Analyze 2d frame structures by using the moment-distribution method,
- Analyze 2d structures by using the stiffness method,
- Calculate influence lines for statically determinate and indeterminate structures,
- Compose a computer code employing the stiffness method.
