Catalog Description
Distinguishes between normal behavior and psychological disorders such as stress disorders, anxiety problems and depression, schizophrenia, and addictive behaviors. Causes and treatments of psychological problems and disorders.
Course Objectives

This course aims to provide students basic knowledge about a variety of psychopathological symptoms manifested during adulthood. The mental disorders covered in the class will be presented based on DSM-V’s (American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition) most recent diagnostic criteria. We will discuss basic concepts pertaining to the particular mental disorders, diagnostic criteria for each disorder, the concept of differential diagnosis, prevalence of particular psychopathologies, and possible treatment options in detail. 

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, the students will be able to:

  1. Have basic knowledge about main criteria pertaining to mental disorders manifested throughout adulthood.
  2. Differentiate similar mental disorders based on differential diagnostic criteria.
  3. Make a proper referral if they believe the individual has either a psychiatric or psychological help.
