Catalog Description
Beam bending. Transverse shear. Torsion. Combined stress due to bending, torsion, shear, and axial load. Stress-strain transformation. Strain rosettes. Deflection of beams and shafts. Energy methods: Virtual work, strain energy.
Course Objectives

This course investigates the stresses and strains in load carrying members under various loading conditions, introduces the concept of principle stresses and the use of Mohr’s circle to solve problems. It provides a base for further study and specialization in solid mechanics.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Determine stresses in beams,

2. Compute the torsional shear stress and deformation,

3. Perform stress transformation,

4. Determine the equation of elastic curve,

5. Apply the principle of virtual work and strain energy.
