Catalog Description
Beam bending. Transverse shear. Torsion. Combined stress due to bending, torsion, shear, and axial load. Stress-strain transformation. Strain rosettes. Deflection of beams and shafts. Energy methods: Virtual work, strain energy.
Course Objectives
Shear force, transverse shear, pressure vessels, combined loading, steress-strain transformations, failure theories, design of beams and shafts, deflection of beams and shafts, stress concetrations, fatique, creep, energy methods, Castigliano's theorem, buckling of columns, basics of material selection
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to
1.use plane stress transformation to find principal stress states
2. understand the principle of virtual work
3. understand small-strain elastic-plastic deformation;
4. understand failure modes for materials;
5. develop an awareness of mechanics to provides base for further study and specialization within solid mechanics, including continuum mechanics; computational mechanics (e.g., finite-element methods).
