This course aims to introduce to the students the existence and time-space distribution of water on the earth and to the problems for mankind in relation to water. In this course, collection and analysis of hydrologic data is covered and an introduction to design of hydraulic structures, ground water hydrology, storm and waste water collection systems, and irrigation and drainage systems in accordance with international engineering guidelines and practices is given.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Recognize the elements of the hydrological cycle,
Analyze the precipitation data, rainfall intensities and hydrographs,
Determine the storage capacity of dams and variations in a reservoir during a flood,
Analyze the stability of concrete gravity and arch dams,
Investigate the hydraulics of overflow spillways and energy dissipation basins,
Conceptualize groundwater flow and processes in simple groundwater systems,
Design wastewater and storm water systems,
Determine the dimensions of irrigation canals and drainage systems.
