Catalog Description
Principles of pharmacology. Endogenous neuroactive substances produced in the body and in the brain. Chemicals that are used in a therapeutic context to treat psychological disorders. Chemicals with psychotropic effects. Abused chemicals.
Course Objectives
To give a comprehensive perspective for the importance and richness of electrochemical communication in the nervous system
To ensure that students can recognize different levels of drug actions starting from molecular level up to cellular, circuit and systems levels.
To develop an understanding for short-term and long-term effects of endogenous and exogenous neuroactive chemicals
Course Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to;
a) Define the characteristics of psychoactive substances and different drug actions
b) Describe the possible actions of drugs on the structure and function of the nervous system
c) Compare the commonalities and differences between abused drugs
Distinguish the brain systems and neurotransmitters involved in different psychological disorders
