The aim of this course is to provide detailed information about what play is and how it develops in young children, understand the social justice and equity issues associated with learning through play, and learn about frameworks for equity-centered teaching, consider the teacher’s role in promoting play and playful learning in schools, and learn strategies and tools for teaching and assessing through play, evaluate current research studies related to play in terms of the nature of the study, limitations, validity, and applicability of the findings, know about and be able to advocate for play as critical to young children’s development and learning in schools.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- explain how play influences the development of children in all domains,
- contrast different playful learning examples,
- apply skills in planning play activities for young children on different disciplines,
- use criteria to select and evaluate materials for play and learning
- adapt environments to meet the needs of young children,
